Celebrate The New Year Smoothie

Sunday, January 4th, 2009

I don’t know about you but I have a few bottles of egg nog left over from the holiday season.  Believe it or not, I make my own!  Instead of tossing them out, I’ve been using egg nog as a substitute for the liquids in my smoothies.  The substitution would probably land me on the bad ist of any hard core raw foodist but I’ve never claimed to be 100% raw.  My goal for the next six months is to live gluten-free.  Egg nog just happens to fit the bill.  You can also find dairy free and soy varities or make your own so feel free to substitute as desired.  You’ll see from the recipe below that I add fresh squeezed orange juice  Our family always had oranges on the table during the Christmas Season.  Not sure why but it’s a tradition I’ve carried on in my own home.  I always have extra oranges left over at the end of the holiday season and it’s a perfect addition to my smoothie.  You’ll also note that I add a vanilla bean.  You can substitute vanilla extract or even a scoop of vanilla ice cream.  I use the bean because vanilla extract is not gluten-free.  Toast the New Year with a delicious smoothie.

INGREDIENTS
1/2 cup egg nog
1 whole banana
1/2 cup fresh squeezed orange juice
1 whole vanilla bean ground

METHOD:
Whip all ingredients together in a blender.  Pour into a fancy martini glass and enjoy as the clock strikes twelve.  Yum!

Breaking The Fast Of Day 1

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008

Well today is Day 1 of the Body Enlightenment System.  Day 1 starts with a fast.  Beginning last night at 6 PM and continuing to 6 PM tonight, we were to fast.  Nothing but sunshine, water and relaxation.  Ideally, you were encourged to spend time outdoors and as little time as possible in front of the computer.  I did the exact opposite.  I didn’t get outside at all today and spent the entire day in front of my laptop writing copy for a program I will be releasing soon called Smiling Customer Care: The No-Nonsense Guide To Being An Indispensible Customer Care Representative.  I just finished writing about 30 minutes ago (started at 8:30 AM this morning - so I’ve been at it for a full 7 hours) and I have yet to tear myself away from my machine.

Here’s the thing, I find work relaxing, particularly if it’s on those rare occassions when I actually get to work on projects in my business that I’m excited to release.  Don’t get me wrong, I love the work I do with others but I also have ideas and strategies of my own to share with the world.

Anyway, my point is that I modified the system to suit my needs.  It didn’t serve me to be spending a quiet, unplugged day today so I didn’t.

How did I do with the fast?  Okay so far.  I still have about two hours to go before I break my fast and I’ve managed to keep hunger at bay by gulping down about 2 litres of water.  Up until 1:30 PM it was smooth sailing and then I could feel some hunger pangs.  I’m making a roast beef dinner for my honey-man tonight and started it on a slow roast at noon.  By 1:30 PM, my nosebuds were starting to be tickled by the smells wafting through my house from the kitchen to my office.

By 2:30 PM I confess I broke down and “cheated” by grabbing a banana.  That will hold me clear through until dinner time, when I’ll break the fast with this tasty treat:

Breaking The Fast Drink

INGREDIENTS:
2 whole ripe mangoes
1 whole banana
1 stalk celery
1 handful spinach

METHOD:
For this recipe you don’t need any water, as the ripe mangoes should be juicy enough but in case you do, use less than a quarter cup just to get your blender started.  Blend the mangoes first.  Add in the banana.  Blend with the celery stalks and spinach until smooth.

I’ll be back tomorrow with an update on Day 2.  Guess I better look ahead and see what’s on the menu for tomorrow and make sure I have enough on hand.

Fall For A Pumpkin Smoothie

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

In my circle of friends, I’m known for drinking some of the healthiest prepared smoothies.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve passed on dessert after dinner to slurp down a simple green smoothie.  In an effort to swing my friends (particularly my honey man with whom I want to spend a lifetime of Sundays) over to the green side, I’ve been mixing up some healthy tasting smoothie recipes that remind them of some their favorite desserts.  My pumpkin smoothie tastes like pie in a glass.  Give it a try!

INGREDIENTS:
1/2 cup canned pumpkin puree (or you can make your own if pumpkins are in season)
1/2 cup vanilla soy milk
1/2 cup crushed ice
1 tablespoon honey
1 teaspoon allspice

METHOD:
Whip all ingredients together in a blender.  Pour into a tall glass and enjoy with your Turkey Dinner this Thanksgiving.  Yum!

Importance of Breakfast in Your Diet

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

Many people make the mistake of skipping or scimping on breakfast in their daily diet.  This may be due to any number of reasons…rushing off to work, jumping into household chores, getting caught up with child care or just plain poor eating habits. Breakfast is an important element in one’s daily diet, whatever type of diet you may prefer.

I used to skip breakfast all the time. I would often fill up on water and head out the door for the daily 1.5 hour commute to work. Of course, the first stop after getting off the train would be a coffee - simply to keep me going, not for the caffeine fix! When I worked in the Corporate World, I counted myself among the many who would skip their morning meal. Breakfast was a luxury time didn’t permit.

Some who are very weight loss conscious, or just wish to control weight through diet, erroneously think that skipping breakfast is a good way to eliminate calories. This is a mistake in terms of overall health, calorie control and good diet habits. Because the food we eat in our diet, the times when we eat and the particular type of food intake (protein, starch, sugar) all affect blood sugar levels and appetite. We need to control food intake in our diet in order to keep energy and blood sugar at appropriate levels.

I started back at the gym two months ago after a five year hiatus. One of the first things I did, even before setting foot in the door of the gym, was incorporate a breakfast and a morning snack into my daily routine. It’s made the world of difference. In fact, the days that I don’t eat a full meal or skip my snack, I feel it in my energy levels when I hit the gym.

In essence when we awake in the morning our body has been through a period of “fasting”, with no food intake for a number of hours.  This results in relatively low blood sugar. If one skips breakfast in one’s diet, the blood sugar level continues to dip and a sudden craving can develop for food, especially for sugar in the diet, which again causes a quick rise in blood sugar. When the diet includes sudden intake of sugar, the sugar level jumps, which develops a roller coaster effect and leads to a poor diet which includes “quick fixes”. Typically a quick response to low blood sugar is a sweet, a soft drink or alcohol…none of which are a good diet supplement.

A diet which maintains appropriate levels of blood sugar and energy will include a healthy breakfast. Blood sugar levels will be maintained with a diet that includes a balanced breakfast combining whole grain, some source of protein and fruit. Protein in particular in the diet, including breakfast, will maintain blood sugar levels, avoiding the dips which lead to snacking.

If you’re pressed for time, consider quick easy smoothies. You can chop your fruits and vegetables the night before and load them into your blender glass. Refridgerate overnight (or not if you prefer room temperature smoothies) and whirl away in the blender in the morning along with your favorite liquid. Five minutes is all you’ll need to whip up a nutritious and substantial breakfast. You can even pour it into a travel mug or neoprene jug and tote it with you on your commute.

A healthy breakfast is an essential part of a healthy diet. Beginning your day with a good, nourishing meal is the first step toward maintaining a balanced diet and a sensible approach to good eating habits. Don’t skip breakfast in your daily diet.

Your body will thank you.
